Surfing officially made history in Hawaii this year with the launch of the state’s inaugural high school surf season.

HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union was proud to support this special moment alongside the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH) and the Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA). Through sponsorships, financial wellness outreach, and volunteer support at surf meets and championship events, our team helped connect with student-athletes and families throughout the season.

To help make the inaugural season possible, HawaiiUSA donated $10,000 to the ILH surf program, which was matched with an additional $15,000 through a matching community donation through the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines (FHLBDM), bringing the total contribution to $25,000. HawaiiUSA also contributed $7,000 to support the HHSAA Surfing State Championships held on Maui on May 1–2, 2026.

Throughout the season, HawaiiUSA hosted financial wellness tents at surf meets, offering free financial education resources, scholarships, and college planning information, personalized coaching opportunities, giveaways, and youth membership incentives. Combined, the events generated more than 550 financial wellness interactions with athletes, parents, and spectators.

Beyond the shoreline, after learning several schools needed surf equipment for their teams, HawaiiUSA organized a surfboard and bodyboard drive at our Mililani, Pearl City, and Main branches. Donations were provided to Waipahu High School and Farrington High School, helping expand access to the sport for more student-athletes.

The effort also received support from legendary Hawaii big-wave surfer Aaron Gold, who generously donated boards to student-athletes. Additional support was provided to surf programs at Hawaii Academy of Arts & Sciences (HAAS) on Hawaii Island and Waialua High School, both of which celebrated multiple state championship victories during the season.

As Hawaii celebrates the success of its first-ever high school surf season, we know youth athletics help build strong, confident communities. Sports teach resilience, discipline, teamwork, and leadership, all values that align closely with lifelong financial wellness and personal growth.

We’re honored to support programs that create opportunities for Hawaii’s students, both in competition and beyond.
