Sweepstakes Scams (11.16.11)
November 16, 2011
HawaiiUSA FCU would like to remind our members to be aware of potential scams through postal mail, email, text messaging and phone calls amongst other means. A recent scam circulating via postal mail is for a Vision Plan Sweepstakes Commission. Recipients of the letter are notified they are the winner of $100,000 and the enclosed check is to cover the processing fees and taxes. However, in order to deposit the check, the recipient must call a Claims Agent listed in the letter to activate the check and start the claim and remittance process of the prize. This is a scam. Do not call the Claims Agent or deposit the check.
For more information about the different scams, please visit the Federal Trade Commission’s website at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/phonefraud/sweepstakes.shtml.
