Helping Hawaii's Students Go to College

HawaiiUSA is proud to be a sponsoring partner of HACAC, the Hawaii Association of College Admissions Counselors. As a sponsor, we are the exclusive publisher of "College Planning, a Family Affair", a college guidebook distributed free at HACAC College Planning Nights. At these events, HACAC representatives share their expertise with students and parents on topics ranging from college preparation, school selection and college life, to financial aid and more.

Credit union representatives are on-hand with valuable financial education and tips for students facing their newfound independence. Attendees learn about HawaiiUSA's Credit Union Student Choice college lending program that helps fund the gap that federal aid may leave behind. The next HACAC event will be held at Waipahu High School on April 24, 7-9pm. This special event will feature guest speaker Tyler Disburg, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Credit Union Student Choice.

Recognizing HI Achievers

HawaiiUSA and Hawaii News Now are proud sponsors of HI Achievers, a program that recognizes high school students who excel in academics, while giving back to the community. Selected students receive a prize package including $200 cash and a chance to earn certification in financial education, based on the credit union’s Life Events Assistance Program (LEAP). Awardees are also spotlighted in a special Sunrise Morning News segment. Congratulations to our first three recipients:

Diana Nguyen, Senior - Kaimuki High School

Diana started a program that helps freshmen transition into high school. Over the past 18 months, she spent her Saturdays mentoring students, offering guidance, advice, and even helping with homework. Her inspiration comes from her parents, who arrived from Vietnam with hopes of a better life for their children.

Andrea Jurado, Senior – Waipahu High School

Andrea has earned many academic awards including the prestigious Hamilton Scholar Award, bestowed to only 32 students nationwide. She currently studies plant proteins in hopes of someday finding a cure for cancer. Andrea’s successes are driven by her deep appreciation for her parents, immigrants from the Philippines, whose sacrifices are making her and her siblings’ dreams possible.

Spencer Kiehm, Junior - Iolani School

Spencer maintains a 4.4 GPA and is currently enrolled in all AP classes. As a National Merit semifinalist, he has earned early admission into Harvard University. He has volunteered at numerous charitable events including the Great Aloha Run, Relay For Life, Race For The Cure, and The Heart Walk among others. He also captained the football, judo and wrestling teams.

HawaiiUSA Credit Protection Plan

The HawaiiUSA Credit Protection Plan (HCPP) was created exclusively for members of HawaiiUSA FCU who make loans with us. HCPP is an optional program that cancels your loan payments if you involuntarily lose your job or become disabled. Loss of Life coverage cancels your loan balance if you pass away so your family members don't have to worry about paying off the loan on less income.

If you're thinking about getting a credit card, HCPP wants you to know about these new enhancements beginning April 1, 2014:

Since launching HCPP on 8/1/05 through 12/31/13, the program has paid out the following in claims:

If you made a loan with us and did not protect it with HCPP, or you're looking at getting a new loan or credit card, ask for details about our HCPP Program on your next visit to one of our branches.
