When you use your debit card or write a check, do you know if you have enough money in your checking account to cover the transaction? Not knowing can cost you in the form of nonsufficient funds fees.
Following a few simple steps can help you avoid these expensive fees:
- Check your account balance: If you know your account balance, you will know if you have enough money for a particular transaction. You can check your balance 24/7 using our mobile app or visiting our website at www.hawaiiusafcu.com.
- Have a balanced budget: If you regularly find yourself short on cash and need to overdraw to pay for essentials, look for ways to reduce your spending and/or increase your income. Overdrawing can provide immediate relief but may create more difficulties for you next month.
- Use overdraft protection: It is best to avoid overdrawing or bouncing checks completely, but if you feel that may be difficult, consider overdraft protection. It deducts or charges any amount you overdraw from a savings account or line of credit linked to your account. Call our Member Service Center at 534.4300 or toll free (800) 379.1300 for more information!

As you plan for retirement, three critical factors determine how much money you have in retirement and will affect the quality of your retirement.
The first factor is time. The younger you start saving, the more you will have in retirement. Even a modest start can have profound results because of the power of compounding.
The second factor affecting your retirement nest egg is the amount you save. The most you can afford to save is the right amount. If you have a 401k or 403b at work, you can put away up to $17,500 in 2013. If you are over 50, you can save an additional $5,500. If not, you can contribute to an IRA or Roth IRA up to $5,500 in 2013 (over 50 can save $6,500). Starting young with a smaller amount and increasing the contribution as you can will yield good results.
The final factor affecting your retirement nest egg is the quality of your investment. If you are in retirement or close to retirement, you should consider more conservative investments that offer lower yields and less volatility. However, if you are more than ten years from retirement, investing in high quality mutual funds have historically provided the best returns.
