Redesigned $100 Note - Circulation begins October 8, 2013

New $100 Bill

The Federal Reserve Board (FRB) announced that the redesigned $100 note will begin circulating on October 8, 2013. From that point forward, depository institutions ordering $100 notes from the FRB will begin receiving the new note, which will be easier for the public to authenticate but more difficult for counterfeiters to replicate. The note incorporates new security features such as a blue 3-D security ribbon, raised- and micro-printing, a color-shifting 100, and a portrait watermark.

Consumers and businesses will not have to trade in older $100 notes for new ones—the older designs of Federal Reserve notes remain legal tender, and will not be recalled, demonetized, or devalued.

Although this new design was actually unveiled in 2010, a production delay postponed its introduction. Therefore, to ensure the smooth transition to the redesigned note, the U.S. Currency Education Program is reaching out to businesses and consumers around the world to raise awareness about the new design and inform them about how to use its security features. More information about the new $100 note, as well as training and educational materials, are available at www.newmoney.gov.

General Safety Tips: Protecting Your Valuables

Although general property crime statistics have been decreasing in Hawaii over the years, crime still happens on a daily basis in our islands. Criminals do not discriminate and anyone can become a victim at any time. HawaiiUSA wants to remind our members to be vigilant when handling money and valuables in public. Here are some general safety tips to help you stay safe:

It is always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings. Criminals are opportunistic. They will usually wait for an opportunity to take advantage of a victim who is unaware and not paying attention.

These tips are provided to help our members protect their valuable assets and themselves.

The Incredible Shrinking IRA

What would you think of an investment which, after 15 years, couldn't buy as much as it could when you first invested the money? If you have a Traditional or Roth IRA in a low-yielding share account, that’s what your hard-earned dollars are currently doing.

In today's low interest environment, share-deposit IRA’s are earning less than .5% a year. While they have the advantage of being NCUA insured, they are hardly growing in value. At the same time, the cost of living continues to rise. This increase in the cost of everything is known as inflation and, historically, averages about 3.00% a year.

What can you do about this steady erosion in the purchasing power of your retirement funds? At HawaiiUSA Investment and Insurance Services, available through CFS*, we provide members with options for their retirement dollars. We invite you to give us a call at 844.8338 or stop in at any HawaiiUSA branch and speak with a Financial Advisor. Have your retirement money work as hard as you do.

*Non-deposit investment products and services are offered through CUSO Financial Services, L.P. (“CFS”), a registered broker-dealer (Member FINRA/SIPC) and SEC Registered Investment Advisor.  Products offered through CFS: are not NCUA/NCUSIF or otherwise federally insured, are not guarantees or obligations of the credit union, and may involve investment risk including possible loss of principal. Investment Representatives are registered through CFS. HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union has contracted with CFS to make non-deposit investment products and services available to credit union members.
