HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union and Chaminade University of Honolulu are partnering to help prepare public school educators to be ready to teach economics and personal finance at their grade levels. Registration for a summer workshop is now open for K-12 teachers to apply for this unique learning opportunity. The workshop will take place from July 11-15, 2022 and will be held at the Chaminade University campus. Registration is open until June 15.

As the state’s largest credit union, HawaiiUSA has built a legacy of supporting teachers. The partnership with Chaminade perpetuates this legacy and aligns with HawaiiUSA’s mission to inspire financial wellness in the community. Teachers will gain a better understanding of economics and personal finance and learn ways to effectively implement the Hawaii K-12 Social Studies Common Core standards in their classes with innovative and interactive lessons and activities. To ensure teachers have an opportunity to apply for and afford this workshop, HawaiiUSA is sponsoring the tuition for 20 qualified teachers.

"We know that financial wellness is most influential when money is discussed at a young and impressionable age,” says Greg Young, president and CEO of HawaiiUSA. "That is why we have partnered with Chaminade to support the economic education initiatives they have planned for K-12 teachers and high school students. These programs are essential in shaping the next generation’s confidence towards money and personal finance. Additionally, teachers who successfully complete this course earn credits that can be applied to their professional development, ultimately impacting their own personal financial health."

The summer workshop is sponsored by HawaiiUSA and offered through Chaminade University’s Economic Education Center for Excellence (EECE), which was launched in April 2021 to provide accessible professional development training programs for K-12 educators and be a knowledge hub of economic education resources.
